This piece came out of a painting I made twelve months ago that hung in my studio untouched for months:
I had been seeing and thinking about this painting for over a year every time I went into my studio Then my girlfriend gave me a supercool t-shirtw with navigational flags spelling out a SECRET MESSAGE. That got me to thinking more. So I asked my good friend ChatGPT for the navigational flags for F E A R N O T and painted them in. Then I prompted (love that verb) for some translations and visuals of “fear not” in different forms of communication.Different languages. Different alphabets. Then I added in some notes I had been taking from books I was reading. If you blow the art up on your screen, you will see translations, Arabic and Greek letterings (to name a few), phrases, song lyrics, and the signal flags. I’ll let the painting speak for itself, it seems to me it wanted to be UNIVERSAL.
Fitting all these little messages into the canvas reminded me of junior and senior high school when my girlfriends Kathy and Penny and I would pass little folded notes down the desks to each other. The items that showed up in this painting were like little folded notes from angels, all saying not to worry about things going on in the world.
Here are some of my favorite parts:
